Sickness...

Our home has been plagued with sickness. I think I have a new New Years Resolution (is it too late for those) it is to not take the boys to doctor's office--whether a well visit or sick. Tuesday, the day after Jonathan's vaccinations, he ran a high fever all day. I understood that day. That following Sunday, he woke up feeling warm and continued to go down hill from there. By Tuesday, he was still running a fever and the doctors wanted to see him. We go and we waste money. They say it's viral and to let it run its course. Wednesday was terrible. His fever was the highest and he was miserably cranky. His little eyes, normally so bright and lively, looked tired and dull. Thursday, he woke up and his fever was gone. Yipee!! He wasn't his usual fun and jovial kid but I figured he was still getting better. Today he wakes up with a fever and I call the doctor's office. They tell me it's viral and to wait 24 to 48 hours for it to run its course. I don't get it. I'm going to take him tomorrow to see the doctor again. A rash popped up today...and it continues.
Back to my resolution...he was perfectly fine before that visit but since it, lots of sickness.
Other than that all it well.

Check-Ups

Finally, after much delay, we took our boys to their well visit check-ups. Since we moved here we have had a hard time deciding where we were going to take our boys. Most people here send their kids to a family practice, but I'm not comfortable with that. Tonya told me about this practice and so far we have liked it (although it did take almost 2 hours for the visit; that's a lot of entertaining in a small room).

The doctor arrives in the room and starts telling us that both our boys are growing well. Then he asks the the all-too-familiar question, "Has his [Andrew] head always been this big?" Yes, we get it, two large headed people make a large headed baby. He was is in the 75% (that is actually down from his regular 90%+). He also had his hearing checked. I wasn't there for this but Chris gave me the highlights. Andrew put on the headphones and the nurse started the test. Chris said she kept turning up the knob and turning it up. She looks at Andrew and he is just smiling at her. She turns up the knob a little more and Andrew continues to smile at her. She is just about to write down that our child is deaf when Chris steps in. He asks Andrew, "Are your hearing anything?" Andrew replies, "Yes, lots of beeps." Chris said it was funny just to see his face. It was like he was saying, "Yeah, there's a lot of beeps and they are getting quite annoying." Chris explains what he needs to do and he passes the with flying colors.

Jonathan did great as well. He is growing and moving like he should be. Our doctor was a little concerned with his lack of speaking. He told us he should be saying about 20 words and all we could come up with was 8 (and half of those are what we think he is saying). The doctor gave me some tips on what I could be doing to encourage his speech. We'll reevaluate at 2 years and decide if he needs speech therapy.

I think it is God's way of humbling me as a mother. With Andrew, he was always so advanced with his speech I thought maybe it was me just being a great mommy. But then Jonathan comes along and I do all the same things I did with Andrew and I don't get the same results. Although, this is par for Jonathan's course. All the training we do with Jonathan it always takes a little longer for him to get. I just have to be patient and persistent with him. Eventually he will understand the concept, it just takes time.

Finally, the nurse comes back for both of their vaccinations. She walks in the room and here's how it plays out:
Nurse: Alright, who's going to go first?
A: Jonathan is!!!!

Way to throw your non-speaking brother under the bus.

Humilty...

Here's our latest conversations...

This morning at the breakfast table:
Me: Aren't you looking pretty?
Andrew: Not pretty...PRETTY AWESOME!
----------------
Recently we taught Andrew how to sign I love you. When he signs it with both hands it means he really loves you.
Me: Signing I love you with both hands.
Andrew signs it back and says...
A: I wish I had two hands on my head so I could really show you how much I love you.
Weirdly sweet.

Pool Pictures

Here's our fun in the pool.

Jonathan (being a true boy) loves blowing raspberries on the sides of the pool or the bathtub. He gets such a kick out of hearing that sound and will look to see if I'm enjoying it just as much as him. Plus, you get to hear him jibber jabber away about something very important.

Lastest Conversations...

A: Mommy I don't want to be a fireman any more.
Me: Oh yeah, what do you want to be now?
A: I want to be a policeman who helps other people. Oh and I want to have a dog too, like my Uncle Travis.
---------------
We are driving along and he asks me:
A: Mommy, what does that bird sound like?
Me: I don't know. Tweet Tweet Tweet Tweet
A: No, I don't think that's it.
Me: Maybe, KAKAW KAKAW KAKAW KAKAW
A: No, I don't think that's it either.
I sneeze because something tickles my nose.
A: No, I don't think that's it either. I think it's more like sqawk sqawk, sqawk sqawk.
---------------
We are driving along again:
A: Uh oooo
Me: What is it?
A: You DO NOT want to look back here.

Pool Time

One of the many things I love about our new home is our patio. It seems so trifle but our last home had a 3x3 slab out back and we never added a porch. Since we have the space (finally) we bought a kiddie pool for the boys.
Jonathan is a talking fool. Just a couple of weeks ago he would just sign please and cry his eyes out if you didn't understand what he wanted. Now he comes up to you and says, "adfakjsdnfaweu, k;asjdofiwefr (lots of pointing with his chubby little finger), a;alsdfoiwer (more pointing)," and finally I get it, he thirsty and wants his juice. Okay, so technically that's not really talking but it is adorable when he comes up to you and just starts jibbing away like I should know what he is saying. One thing he can say clearly is peek-a-boo.
