Check-Ups

Finally, after much delay, we took our boys to their well visit check-ups. Since we moved here we have had a hard time deciding where we were going to take our boys. Most people here send their kids to a family practice, but I'm not comfortable with that. Tonya told me about this practice and so far we have liked it (although it did take almost 2 hours for the visit; that's a lot of entertaining in a small room).

The doctor arrives in the room and starts telling us that both our boys are growing well. Then he asks the the all-too-familiar question, "Has his [Andrew] head always been this big?" Yes, we get it, two large headed people make a large headed baby. He was is in the 75% (that is actually down from his regular 90%+). He also had his hearing checked. I wasn't there for this but Chris gave me the highlights. Andrew put on the headphones and the nurse started the test. Chris said she kept turning up the knob and turning it up. She looks at Andrew and he is just smiling at her. She turns up the knob a little more and Andrew continues to smile at her. She is just about to write down that our child is deaf when Chris steps in. He asks Andrew, "Are your hearing anything?" Andrew replies, "Yes, lots of beeps." Chris said it was funny just to see his face. It was like he was saying, "Yeah, there's a lot of beeps and they are getting quite annoying." Chris explains what he needs to do and he passes the with flying colors.

Jonathan did great as well. He is growing and moving like he should be. Our doctor was a little concerned with his lack of speaking. He told us he should be saying about 20 words and all we could come up with was 8 (and half of those are what we think he is saying). The doctor gave me some tips on what I could be doing to encourage his speech. We'll reevaluate at 2 years and decide if he needs speech therapy.

I think it is God's way of humbling me as a mother. With Andrew, he was always so advanced with his speech I thought maybe it was me just being a great mommy. But then Jonathan comes along and I do all the same things I did with Andrew and I don't get the same results. Although, this is par for Jonathan's course. All the training we do with Jonathan it always takes a little longer for him to get. I just have to be patient and persistent with him. Eventually he will understand the concept, it just takes time.

Finally, the nurse comes back for both of their vaccinations. She walks in the room and here's how it plays out:
Nurse: Alright, who's going to go first?
A: Jonathan is!!!!

Way to throw your non-speaking brother under the bus.

isaac doesn't say much either. i think it's because he spends all his time practicing his motor skills, like running, jumping, rolling, diving, climbing, and destroying things. seems like jdowd2 might be doing the same? future athletes and not future academics, perhaps?

i THINK isaac says: thank you, out, byebye, dada, mama, all done, lucy, down, and uhoh. and most of that sounds like "da da" to those not familiar with the inflection and timing...

oh - and he can roar like a lion. and moo.

I tried to explain that to the doctor but to no avail.

He says: dada, mama, baby, juice, bar bar (that's dog), brother, Andrew, and peek-a-boo. He sighs please, more, and all done.

He just recently started to roar like a lion, my personal favorite. When he plays with automobiles he'll make the vroom sound.

I'm not worried because now Andrew is trying to make him talk. Jonathan will want something and Andrew will say, "You need to say the word Boo Boos or I can't give it to you." He's a pretty strict teacher.

Hey Jessie! Jen W. Stevens here..
I feel the same way. Benjamin did EVERYTHING early...Sarah Beth went for her 1 year check up and this is how that played out:
Dr.: Is she walking?
Me: No
Dr.: Talking?
Me: No
Dr.: Does she have any teeth?
Me: No
Dr.: What does she do?
Me: well, she's awfully cute. She says "Mama, baba, dada" but I don't think they are directed at anyone.
Dr: We need to re-evaluate her in 3 months.
Hope you are well...I miss you guys a log. :) We are planning a trip to Va. soon to see family in Roanoke/Salem. I'll look you up, I have the church info. :)
